Do You Need a Bone Graft?
To determine if you are a candidate for dental implants, your doctor will measure the depth, width, and strength of your jawbone. Bone that is not fully developed, is soft in places, or is weak may require a bone graft. Otherwise, the bone would be unable to accommodate the implant posts.

Strong bone density is a prerequisite for dental implant placement. Without enough bone to stabilize the dental implants, the dental implants would risk failure. When implants are placed into healthy bone by a trained dental professional, the failure rate is extremely low.
The Bone Grafting Process
During bone grafting, local anesthesia is administered for patient comfort. If sedation is desired, our office offers nitrous oxide. During the procedure, the bone grafting material is surgically placed in the area of low bone density. The amount of bone and length of surgery will depend upon the patient’s circumstances and needs. After placement of the donor bone or other material, the site is covered with a special membrane to promote the fusion of the new bone with the old bone.
Sinus Lift
A sinus lift is a specific type of dental bone graft that raises the sinus membrane above the upper arch. During this procedure, the doctor carefully obtains access through the jawbone. Once the sinus membrane is reached, it is gently lifted to make room for donor bone or another bone-like synthetic material.
A bone graft operation requires at least one and maybe two surgical sites. In some cases, the bone graft may be obtained from another portion of the patient’s jaw. Today, however, most bone grafting material is purchased from a bone and tissue bank. This less-invasive approach significantly reduces the need for multiple surgical sites.
What to Expect After a Bone Graft
Patients can expect some soreness and discomfort after receiving a bone graft. In some cases, painkillers and other doctor-supervised medicines may be prescribed. Unless the patient experiences complications, his or her bone graft will require around four to six months to fully heal. During this time, the new bone or synthetic material fuses with the old bone.
